McDuffie Center for Strings | Mercer University - Macon, GA

Originally built in 1855, the McDuffie Center for Strings is a Georgia landmark that has been transformed into a state-of-the-art teaching facility. This comprehensive renovation converted a 150-year-old building—previously a residence, restaurant, and offices—into a premier music center with dedicated practice rooms, faculty offices, and a 60-seat performance hall. The project included a carefully integrated elevator and restroom additions to meet ADA requirements, all while preserving the building’s historic character in accordance with the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for Historic Rehabilitation. The renovation not only qualified for historic tax credits but also positions Mercer’s students to compete at the highest levels, rivaling institutions such as Juilliard.
